Travelling as a medical attendant: what changes

An attendant’s file is not a copy of the patient’s. Relationship evidence and the link to the patient’s treatment carry the weight.

The attendant file is its own file

An attendant is a separate applicant with a separate document set. Preparing it as an afterthought to the patient’s file is the single most common reason attendant preparation runs late.

Evidencing the relationship

The relationship to the patient needs to be demonstrable through documentation, not simply stated. Which document serves this purpose depends on the relationship, and it is worth confirming before you spend time collecting the wrong one.

Consistency with the patient’s case

Dates, the treating institution and the travel period should align across both files. Inconsistencies between a patient and attendant file draw attention that neither applicant benefits from.

How many attendants

The number of attendants that may accompany a patient is set by the relevant authority and is not something an assistance service can extend. Plan around the published position rather than around hope.
